Volkswagen I.D. VIZZION specs and features

Customers of Spitzer Volkswagen still have a few years to wait until the best parts of the automaker’s product line are available in our showroom. The manufacturer has been touting its commitment to having electric vehicles in its lineup by the 2020 model year. In the grand scheme of things that isn’t all that far away. However, VW owners looking forward to not having to control a vehicle for themselves will need a bit more patience.

In addition to aiming for the top of the future electric vehicle class, Volkswagen is already working hard to be on the cutting-edge of autonomous driving. What really sets the VW I.D. VIZZION apart from the rest of the manufacturer’s future concept vehicles is that it’s being designed with Level 5 automation in mind. This means that once a person gets inside of the vehicle, an ultra-advanced suite of software takes over for the rest of the trip.

If you look at the concept photos Volkswagen has released, you will notice a complete lack of driver controls. There are no steering wheels, foot pedals or even dashboard-mounted elements. Buttons and dials are going to be an endangered species under VW’s vision of the future.

The I.D. VIZZION will use an array of laser scanners, ultrasonic sensors and radar inputs to continuously monitor the area around the vehicle. According to information from Volkswagen, once a passenger initiates the protocols used for setting the car in motion, they are taken out of the loop. Not only will the I.D. VIZZION be equipped with the latest technology to monitor the environment by itself, it will be able to communicate with other vehicles on the road to give the passengers a picture of traffic.

When we looked at this information for the first time, we were very curious how someone would change the radio station or use the vehicle’s climate control system. Everything will be controlled by asking for it or with gesture controls. Volkswagen is working with experts at Microsoft to work on these features. As of right now, it appears as though riders in the I.D. VIZZION will wear some kind of virtual or augmented reality device that will allow them to control just about any aspect of the vehicle.

Another interesting possibility is that each individual passenger will be able to set up preferences that the I.D. VIZZION will remember through stored biometric data.
